Srujan Pratishthan - Kshamata Vikasan Kendra (formerly known as Dr. Shanta Vaidya Memorial Foundation - Maitra) is working in the space of Specific Learning Difficulties (SLD) and Emotional Wellbeing since past 12-years.
Specific Learning Disability (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with significant problems in language processing, which are evident through difficulties in reading, writing, spelling, and mathematics. SLD is typically diagnosed in early school-aged children, although may not be recognized until adulthood.
SLD was recognized and notified as a disability by the Government of India under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act in 2016.
Children with SLD generally have average or above average intelligent quotient. Due to lack of awareness of the subject among the teachers and appropriate intervention with compensatory teaching strategies, there is a hindrance to the holistic development of unidentified children. Feeling of deprived of mainstream education & social unacceptance, may lead to loss of competent and capable educated population. A few studies show that children with learning difficulties face psychological health issues like anxiety, anger, depression, aggression etc. more than their peers without learning difficulties. (Barkauskiene R; https://europepmc.org/article/med/12474794).A few surveys also suggest that 50% of children in conflict with law fall in the category of learning disabilities (S McKay, R.A. Brumback, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7220224).
We thrive to facilitate Ability Enhancement of the children identified having SLD (like Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia) by adopting a holistic development process in collaboration with the stakeholders. We work with parents, teachers, principals, counsellors etc. through various programs for the ability enhancement of the children.
National Brain Research Centre (NBRC) India (Dept. of Science & Technology, Govt. of India) has developed an assessment tool DALI (Dyslexia Assessment for Languages of India) in South Asian languages. Govt. of India selected Srujan Pratishthan to develop this assessment tool in Marathi language. (Ref. NBRC Annual Report 2015-16 Pg. 76.)
